On Aug. 2, 2020, a fan posted an article about IU in online community in Korea. The article is about how much IU donated her money for various charities, which brought public's attention.
The fan made a list of where and how much IU made donations, started from February to August of this year. So far she made 12 donations and spent over 700 million KRW.
The list of organizations that IU helped ranges from Good Neighbors, Korean Medical Association, marginalized group facility, flood victims, Korean Nurses Association and many more.
IU previously had an interview with a fashion magazine, Ceci. During the interview IU shared her thoughts about wealth. Basically she said money couldn't buy her happiness, which self-explaining on why she decided to help others in the society.
Fans who saw the 'exposed' story of IU's donations in online community praised her for kindness.

“올해에만 7억을 썼다…” 아이유가 '8개월' 동안 큰돈을 쓴 이유
올해에만 무려 7억 넘게 돈을 쓴 연예인이 있다. 바로 아이유다.
2일 온라인 커뮤니티 에펨코리아에는 '올해에만 7억이나 쓴 연예인ㄷㄷㄷㄷ'이라는 제목의 게시물이 올라와 주목받았다. 해당 게시물을 작성한 네티즌은 아이유가 7억이라는 큰돈을 쓴 곳은 바로 '기부처'라며, 놀라움을 드러냈다.
해당 네티즌은 '올해 초부터 지난달 8월까지 아이유가 기부한 곳과 금액'을 리스트로 정리해 올렸다. 아직 2020년이 4개월가량 남았지만, 아이유는 지난달 8월까지 총 12번의 기부를 한 것으로 알려졌다.
기부처는 구센이버스, 의사협회, 취약계층 보호시설, 수재민, 간호협회, 과천시, 양평군 등 다양했다. 해당 기부처에 3000만 원부터 1억까지 다양한 금액으로 총 7억 3500만 원에 해당하는 돈을 필요한 곳에 선뜻 내놓았다.
과거 아이유는 패션 잡지 쎄씨와의 인터뷰에서 기부에 대한 자신의 생각을 밝힌 적 있다.
당시 아이유는 “10만 원만 있어도 숨통이 트일 것 같은 때가 있었는데 이제는 더 큰돈에도 둔감해지는 나를 보면서 행복해질 시간을 빼앗기는 기분이 든다”며 “오랜 생각 끝에 더 이상의 재산은 불필요하다는 결론을 내렸다”고 털어놨다.
이에 네티즌들은 "와 난 7만 원 기부하라고해도 안 할 거 같은데...", "나도 몇 번 따라서 함. 그 이후로 아이유 기부할 때마다 따라 해서 갤러들 등골 휘는 중", "난 아이유 안 좋아하는데도 이거는 고개 숙이고 추천 박고 간다" 등 대단하다는 반응을 보이고 있다.
