Son Heung-min (32) is reported to have already signed a one-year contract extension with Tottenham.
Son was set to become a free agent (FA) at the end of this season, as his previous contract was due to expire.
The UK media outlet The Times recently reported that Tottenham plans to exercise its option to extend Son’s contract by one year, with only the official announcement remaining.
Some believe it’s highly likely that Son has already signed the contract extension.
John Wenham, the operator of the Tottenham fan site Lilywhite Rose, expressed this view in an exclusive interview with Tottenham Hotspur News, stating, “It’s very likely that the contract has already been signed.”
Wenham explained, “Even during Son’s previous contract renewal, many people knew about the agreement before the official announcement. It seems information rarely leaks from Son’s inner circle. Tottenham has previously handled his contract renewals very quietly, and it’s highly likely the deal is already done this time as well.”
He added, “If the contract hadn’t been signed yet, other clubs could start contacting Son from January 1. However, there have been no reports of such activities, so I believe the one-year extension is already in place.”
The report suggested that signing Son to a one-year extension is a logical move for Tottenham.
This season, Son has faced criticism for underperforming compared to expectations. Despite this, he remains a crucial figure as the team captain, exerting significant influence both on and off the pitch. He is also an iconic presence for Tottenham fans, drawing thousands of supporters to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium each season and contributing to the club’s revenue through merchandise sales, particularly his jerseys.
Considering these factors, it’s likely that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is keen to keep Son at the club longer. Levy is known for consistently seeking ways to boost the club’s revenue.
In this context, the claim that Son’s contract extension has already been signed, with only the official announcement pending, appears increasingly plausible.
